Thomas Summers is a translator, linguist and researcher specialising in Swahili, African sociolinguistics and digital language use. He holds a BA in Modern Languages from Lancaster University and an MA in Comparative Literature from SOAS University of London, where he is currently completing a PhD in African Languages. His doctoral research examines linguistic innovation in Swahili-language social media, with particular attention to phonology, morphology, orthography, identity and humour in digital communication.
His translation practice brings together linguistic research, literary analysis and a strong interest in the cultural politics of language. In his Swahili translation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda, Summers seeks to preserve the humour, rhythm and irreverence of the original while making its language and literary world meaningful to Swahili-speaking readers.
