Yoseph Mengistu is a linguist, theologian and Lecturer in Amharic at SOAS University of London. Educated in Ethiopia and the United Kingdom, he holds degrees in economics, theology and language teaching, as well as a PhD from SOAS. His doctoral research examined the theological legacy of St Cyril of Alexandria in Orthodox Ethiopia, bringing together historical theology, Ethiopian Christianity and the study of religious texts.

Mengistu has taught and convened Amharic language courses at SOAS for more than a decade. His expertise spans modern and classical languages, Ethiopian history and literature, oral and written Christian traditions, and the relationship between Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Western Christianity. His wider interests include African religion, Islam, missionary Christianity, Black Studies and public theology.
